VOL. VIII OTTAWA-GLANDORF HIGH SCHOOL APRIL, 1999
WHERE ONCE STOOD.........THE CONTINUING SAGA OF THE TWIN ELM TREES
As you know, the Alumni Association dedicated two elm trees at the 25th Anniversary Celebration. The idea was to graft them together to symbolize those that once stood at this location and provided the opening line of our Alma Mater, "Where once stood an old twin elm tree". Those trees contracted the Dutch Elm disease, died, and had to be removed. New disease resistant elms were ordered from a tree farm in New Hampshire and money was raised to pay for them and their planting.
When they arrived, they were four to five foot twigs. Disappointed, the committee wanted to send them back and order larger trees. These larger trees were not available when the first two were ordered. After considering the cost of sending back the small trees and shipping in the new larger ones, that idea was dropped. (Shipping alone would run one hundred and twenty dollars each for a 10 to 12 foot tree.) With the help of Tawa Tree Service the smaller trees were readied for planting on the school lawn. The committee then contacted Woodland Acres, a local nursery, to have them do some landscaping. The new trees are located nearer Locust Street (Ohio 109) and are an asset to the school grounds. The hope is that they will grow large enough to be grafted together and that sometime in the future a twin elm tree may again grace our school grounds.
Where have we been? For seven years we were faithful in getting out a newsletter and then we decided to attempt to update our files. It has taken us over two years to complete the new and improved database. It is to be considered a work in progress. If you have useful information please forward it to us at O-G Alumni Association, Ottawa-Glandorf High School, 630 Glendale Ave., Ottawa, OH 45875
REUNION NEWS: If you have reunion news let us know as soon as plans are made and we may be able help you get the word out. We have a data bank of alumni addresses at the high school and you are welcome to it; however, we need updated information, so please pass along your updated class information. Just send or drop off your reunion booklet and we'll update our files. Class presidents and reunion planners don't forget us, we can help. Just let us know when and where your reunion will be and we will pass the information along in our next newsletter. Thanks!

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PROJECTS: The O-G Alumni Association was founded with a statement of purpose that included the undertaking of worthwhile projects to enhance educational opportunities or improve the physical facilities at O-G schools. Below are some of those projects.
-The Twin Elm Tree project was our first commitment and remains a priority.
-Provided a place for the display of Class Graduation Composites. A series of wall mounted display boards house the composites of each of the graduating class in the newly remodeled high school lobby.
-A sizable donation to replace and improve the light and sound system in the high school auditorium was made. These systems are state of the art and include a projection system for multi-media presentations.
-The painting of the High School Auditorium from institutional light green to a soothing dramatic ivory.
-Future projects under consideration include helping to pay for a video security system, repairing the "Robert J. Hermiller Gymnasium" sign, providing plaques displaying scholarship award winners, and planning activities for students.
Mark your calendars! Plans for the 35th are underway: BIG PLANS are in the works for the 35th Anniversary to be held on football homecoming weekend, Friday and Saturday, October 1st and 2nd. There will be a mixer/bon-fire on Friday after the game with Shawnee and a gathering on Saturday to honor inductees to the
O-G Hall of Fame. In the planning stages is a special salute to the first football team which played during the 1964 season. More information will be available at a later date as we approach the celebration of 35 years of
O-G H.S. Watch the Putnam County Sentinel and the O-G web site for updates.
MEMBERSHIP IN THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION is free by virtue of your graduation from O-G H. S. However donations are accepted for the above projects and others in the works. It is our hope to be able to provide any donor with a small token of appreciation. An attractive Titan Alumni sticker is being prepared for donors and will be mailed out when they become available.
ALUMNI HALL OF FAME NOMINATIONS NEEDED: We are open for nominations in this our third round of inductions as we are ready to open the Hall to new members. The criteria for nomination is simply based on achievements since graduation. We are not providing a form, but if you have a nomination please drop us a line listing those accomplishments that you believe make the nominee worthy. Forward it to the O-G Alumni Association, Ottawa-Glandorf High School, 630 Glendale Avenue, Ottawa, OH 45875.
At the twenty-fifth anniversary gathering, four O-G grads were honored with induction into the Ottawa-Glandorf Hall of Fame. Dr. Brad Dickinson, Dr. Donna Salisbury, Larry Cox, and Dr. Jerry Bugei were the first inductees. At the thirtieth celebration Dr. Mary Ann Uphaus was inducted.
Also "Honorary Alumni" will be inducted. These special people are those that have contributed to the successes of O-G H.S. and will be recognized with a special presentation of honorary diplomas and by having their names engraved on a plaque displayed in the high school. They are selected by a special committee and will be announced at a later date.
So mark your calendars for October 1 and 2, 1999 to come and join in the fun, see familiar faces, and honor some of the best people around.
